Sal's quiet for a moment. I still believe you, he says, and he has to let that sink in. He had hoped, of course, but it was different hearing those words without an undertone of skepticism. Without nervous looks and awkward laughter. All the signs that Sebastian is secretly or not-so-secretly super weirded out by that was just dropped on him.
And then he asks his follow-up questions. Any thought Sal might've had wondering if Jovan's experienced something like this before tumbles out of him. Because this is the worst part of the story. This is what makes him a monster.
